The Allure and History of Japan’s National Dish, Curry Rice!
Thank you for taking the time to read the FB Management newsletter!
Today, we’ll talk about Japan’s national dish, curry rice.
Are you familiar with Japanese curry?
It’s a dish where curry is poured over rice.
Japanese people absolutely love curry.😉
Now, why did curry become so popular in Japan? Let us introduce you to the history of curry rice in Japan.
Where did curry come from?
Curry originated in India and was introduced to Britain in the 18th century.
The first curry powder was created in Britain in the 19th century. It then made its way to Japan through India and Britain.
Curry was introduced to Japan around the end of the Edo period (around the mid-19th century), and at that time, it seems that Japanese people were wary of curry as an unfamiliar food.
The Spread of Curry
In the early Meiji era (around 1870), cooking methods started to be published in recipe books, gradually spreading the popularity of curry.
During that time in Japan, there was no tradition of eating beef or pork, so they used frogs as a substitute.
By the end of the Meiji era (around 1912), potatoes, onions, and carrots became the standard ingredients for curry.
Afterwards, the widespread availability of domestically produced affordable curry powder and the mass production of potatoes, onions, and carrots made them easily accessible and inexpensive. This led to the creation of the modern Japanese curry rice as we know it today during the Taisho era (from 1912 to 1926).
Curry in the Modern Era
Japanese curry rice has continued to be updated to fit the lifestyle and trends of each era, becoming an indispensable part of daily meals in modern times.
In recent years, original curry rice dishes and new menus that can be prepared quickly at home or in restaurants have emerged, further evolving the dish.
